TOP STEERING COLUMN BUSHING KIT

 

 

TO INSTALL YOUR NEW GEM ENTERPRISES  UPPER STEERING COLUMN BUSHING, FIRST REMOVE THE HORN BUTTON. THEN REMOVE THE STEERING WHEEL FROM THE STEERING COLUMN. THE ATTACHING NUT UNSCREWS AND THE WHEEL CAN BE PULLED OFF HE SHAFT IS SOFT AND THE THREADS AND NUT ARE EASILY DAMAGED. USE THE PROPER PULLER!WITH A STEERING WHEEL PULLER . I DO NOT ADVISE BEATING ON THE SHAFT OR NUT WHILE PULLING UP ON THE STEERING WHEEL. T

REMOVE BOTH HALVES OF THE COLUMN SHROUD BY REMOVING THE FOUR POSIDRIV MACHINE SCREWS, ONE FROM EACH SIDE IN THE REAR AND TWO FROM THE LEFT SIDE ABOUT MIDPOINT.

 

REMOVE BOTH STALK SWITCHES, THE RIGHT ONE FIRST BY REMOVING TWO POSIDRIV SCREWS FROM THE LEFT, THEN THE LEFT ONE FROM THE RIGHT. REMOVING THE RIGHT SWITCH EXPOSES THE SCREWS FOR THE LEFT SWITCH. LET THE SWITCHES HANG DOWN OUT OF YOUR WAY.  REMOVE THE TURN SIGNAL RESET CAM BY SPREADING IT GENTLY WITH TWO SCREWDRIVERS

REMOVE THE C CLIP AND THE SPACERS THAT ARE BEHIND IT, AND SAVE FOR REUSE.

REMOVE THE THREE SMALL POSIDRIV SCREWS THAT HOLD THE BEARING RETAINER IN PLACE. THE OLD BEARING RETAINER CAN NOW BE REMOVED BY ROTATING COUNTERCLOCKWISE AND PULLING STRAIGHT OUT.

 

BEHIND THE BEARING RETAINER IS ANOTHER CIRCLIP. CAREFULLY REMOVE THIS CIRCLIP. BE CAREFUL NOT TO DAMAGE THE SHAFT. REMOVE ANY BURS AND POLISH THE SHAFT WITH FINE EMERY CLOTH

INSTALL YOUR NEW BUSHING INTO THE STEERING COLUMN TUBE. BE SURE TO ALIGN THE THREE SCREW HOLES AND THE DIMPLE, (MARKED IN BLACK IN THIS PICTURE) THE WAY THE ORIGINAL WAS. REPLACE THE THREE SMALL SCREWS AS THEY WERE ORIGINALLY

 

REPLACE THE SPACERS AS NEEDED BEING SURE TO HAVE THE WAVY WASHER BETWEEN TWO SMOOTH WASHERS. ADDITIONAL WASHERS ARE INCLUDED IN THE KIT. THE WAVY WASHER SHOULD NOT BE COMPRESSED COMPLETELY. REPLACE THE CIRCLIP INTO THE SLOT IT WAS REMOVED FROM

REPLACE THE TURN SIGNAL TRIP AND BOTH STALK SWITCHES AS THEY WERE REMOVED. BE SURE THAT THE LEFT STALK SWITCH SEATS IN THE DIMPLE IN THE NEW BUSHING SO THAT IT WILL LOCK IN PLACE. REPLACE THE TWO HALVES OF THE STEERING COLUMN SHROUD AND REINSTALL THE STEERING WHEEL AND HORN BUTTON. IT WILL BE HELPFUL IN THE FUTURE IF YOU ADD A BIT OF ANTI-SEIZE TO THE STEERING COLUMN SPLINES AND THREADS. YOU SHOULD NOW HAVE  A STEERING COLUMN WITHOUT THE ALL TOO COMMON UP AND DOWN PLAY THAT SO MANY MGB STEERING COLUMNS HAVE ACQUIRED THROUGH YEARS OF USE. THE NEW BUSHING MAY BE A BIT SNUG AT FIRST BUT AFTER JUST A FEW MILES SHOULD BE A PERFECT FIT.
